Chapter Seven

Stefan could feel someone petting him, stroking his fur. He knew he needed to open his eyes. They just felt so heavy, like twenty-pound weights were keeping his eyelids pulled down. His shoulder felt like it was on fire. It wasn’t as bad as it had been a while ago, but it still pretty much hurt to breathe right now.

And there was a scent hanging in the air that both drew him and scared him. Stefan was afraid to open his eyes and find out where it came from. Something niggled at the back of his mind, telling him he should already know the answer to that mystery, but the pain that washed over him when he tried to dig deeper was more agonizing than the pain in his shoulder at its worst.

“Come on, Stefan. Shift.” Stefan knew that voice. It was Mikhail. He was whispering. “Ezra is up to his old tricks, Stefan. He’s after our mates. You need to shift and heal so you can protect Bay.”

Bay!

Stefan suddenly knew what he had been avoiding, and as much as it hurt him to acknowledge what he didn’t want to acknowledge, he knew he needed to wake up. Whether his mate accepted him or not was a moot point. It was his job to insure that Bay came to no harm.

Stefan twitched as he tried to cross the bridge from unconscious to awareness. His eyelashes fluttered, and then he blinked up at Mikhail.

“Hey.” Mikhail reached up and scratched behind Stefan’s ear. “It’s about time you woke up. We’ve been waiting for hours.” When Stefan just continued to stare at him, Mikhail stood back and nodded to the sleeping man beside Stefan. “He’s been waiting, Stefan. He dug the bullet out and he hasn’t left your side since.”

Stefan lifted his head and stared. He chuffed as he leaned down to sniff at Bay. The sweet musky scent of his mate filled his nostrils, his entire being. If he could have cried as a tiger, he would have.

His mournful yowl filled the air instead.

Mikhail reached out and smoothed his hand over Stefan’s fur, giving his brother the comfort he needed. “Give him a chance, Stefan. There’s a reason he was so upset that you didn’t use a condom. Let him explain it to you so you’ll understand.”

Stefan needed to shift. He knew that. Not only did he need to do it to heal but he would prefer being able to communicate with his brother. He needed to ask Mikhail to watch over Bay since he couldn’t.

Bay didn’t want to see him.

Stefan’s fur began to recede, his bones cracking as they realigned themselves. It was a quick shift and without too much fuss. He had always been able to shift faster than his brothers, something they teased him about but were quick to boast about to others.

Bay must have felt the change come over Stefan. No more than a second after his shift ended did Bay let out a cry, throwing himself into Stefan’s arms.
